DIVINE CONNECTION
I have a divine connection with God.
This is a computer age of electronics where someone can sign on at a computer in one country and seconds later have a connection online with someone in a country thousands of miles away.
As amazing as this may seem, there is something even more amazing. When I turn to my divine source in prayer, I go online with God faster than any computer hardware would ever be capable of making a connection.
I can easily go "live" and online with God throughout the day, wherever I am. With more miraculous results than human technology, God answers my questions even before I ask. The true information highway is a divine one that leads to God.
In my prayers, I go online with God and make a divine connection.

CONNEXION DIVINE

I let the awareness of my freedom in God fill my mind and my body. Now my focus is on freedom, and any tendency to want or need something more dissipates in the freshness of spiritual freedom.

SEASONS
In every season, I am alive with the life of God.
If I were to come upon an apple tree in the middle of winter, I might think from the looks of it's bare branches that this tree will never again bloom and bear fruit. Yet when I return to that same tree in the spring, the beauty and fragrance of its blossoms will fairly shout: "I am alive!"
Just as the appearance of the apple tree changes with the seasons, so does my appearances do not tell the truth about me. If I am going through a season that seems bare because of a challenge, I have hope because I know that God's spirit within me is alive.
And because God's spirit is within me, life, joy, and wisdom are ready to burst forth and declare, "Yes, I am alive with the life of God!"

J'ai réfléchi à tout ce qui avait changé au cours des 34 années écoulées depuis mon dernier séjour en Éthiopie, parcourant le pays en sac à dos avec mon mari, George. Ensuite, nous étions harcelés quotidiennement par des enfants, au mieux verbalement, au pire à coups de pierres. Un enseignant nous a raconté que le gouvernement marxiste, le Derg, avait fermé les écoles secondaires pour que les élèves puissent "se disperser parmi les larges masses dispensant un endoctrinement politique" et que la plupart des enfants (ou leurs parents) boycottaient de toute façon l'école à cause de leur " haut niveau de conscience politique ». Le résultat a été des bandes d'enfants sauvages démontrant leur conscience politique avec dévouement et enthousiasme, notamment en collant un morceau de papier sur la fenêtre de notre bus indiquant : "Explorateur. Yankey Emperiolist rentre chez toi."
Le Derg, à l'origine une collaboration entre la police et l'armée, est arrivé au pouvoir après le renversement d'Hailé Sélassié en 1974 et a choisi le socialisme comme voie à suivre. "Je les ai soutenus au début", m'a dit mon guide, Bedassa. "Il y a eu tellement d'injustices sous Hailé Sélassié. Et l'armée était une belle carrière. On nous a appris que les étrangers étaient du côté de l'impérialisme. Oui, je détestais les Américains. Et les Britanniques !" J'ai demandé s'il avait changé d'avis, mais je connaissais la réponse. Bedassa possède désormais sa propre entreprise et les touristes découvrent l’Éthiopie de plus en plus nombreux. Mais en 1976, non seulement nous représentions l’ennemi, mais une guerre civile éclatait alors que l’Érythrée luttait pour son indépendance.
Axum est à portée de balle de la frontière érythréenne et, en 1976, George et moi n'avions pas le droit de nous y rendre. C'est là que l'histoire de l'Éthiopie a commencé et ce fut ma première étape en 2010. Il y a deux mille ans, l'empire Axoumite était un important centre commercial et, au milieu du IVe siècle, le christianisme était la religion officielle. Axoum est également le lieu de repos légendaire de l'Arche d'Alliance, son histoire religieuse s'étend donc à la fois sur l'Ancien et le Nouveau Testament. C'est un endroit fascinant, qui rappelle l'Égypte avec ses obélisques préchrétiens. Hautes de plus de 24 mètres et taillées dans d’énormes blocs de granit, transportés, peut-être par des éléphants, depuis une carrière située à près de six kilomètres de distance, ces monuments constituent un exploit extraordinaire, rendu encore plus impressionnant par le fait qu’ils ne servent à rien – sauf à impressionner. Ils semblent avoir été érigés par une série de dirigeants pour symboliser le pouvoir et sont décorés de fausses portes et fenêtres. Au-dessous d'eux se trouvent des chambres funéraires dont la maçonnerie parfaite rappelle celle des Incas, bien qu'elles soient antérieures de 1 000 ans.
Les anciens Éthiopiens étaient sans égal dans leur maîtrise de la taille de la pierre. Dans tout le nord du pays se trouvent des églises taillées dans le roc, dont les plus célèbres se trouvent à Lalibela, construites sur des collines entourées de plaines plates et fertiles. La fertilité mène à la richesse, et comme en témoignent les grandes églises et cathédrales du monde chrétien, les États riches se sont tournés vers Dieu pour maintenir leur fortune.
C'était donc à Lalibela. Mais je préfère la version éthiopienne de la création des églises de la ville au XIIe siècle par le roi éponyme. Un essaim d'abeilles a prophétisé que Lalibela remplacerait son frère, l'héritier légitime. Le frère était naturellement irrité, surtout parce qu’il était roi à l’époque. Sa tentative d'empoisonner son frère fut cependant un échec retentissant, car alors que Lalibela était dans le coma, un ange emmena son âme au ciel et lui montra les plans des églises qu'il devait construire dans et autour du petit village de Roha. Au même moment, un autre ange rendit visite au roi et le persuada d'abdiquer en faveur de Lalibela.
Ainsi, le décor était planté pour la construction de ce qui est peut-être le site antique le plus extraordinaire d’Afrique subsaharienne. Les anges n’avaient aucun intérêt à construire des églises de manière simple, à partir de zéro. Non, ils doivent être creusés dans la roche sous les pieds, jusqu'à ce qu'une église autonome soit créée au fond d'une fosse profonde avec un labyrinthe de tunnels et de tranchées permettant un accès souterrain. Les 14 églises ont été achevées en 24 ans, dit-on, avec des anges prenant le relais de nuit.
En 1976, j'écrivais : "Lalibela est une véritable ville. Elle a un hôpital, un hôtel touristique et un autre en construction... et beaucoup de gens pauvres." Aujourd’hui, elle compte 20 hôtels et moins de personnes pauvres. Les touristes qui arrivent quotidiennement ont laissé leur marque positive. J'ai rencontré Hugh Sharp, un médecin qui a jumelé Lalibela avec Glastonbury et qui, en cinq ans, a collecté 90 000 £ pour des projets communautaires dans la ville. J'ai également rencontré les fondateurs d'Ethiopie Education Aid qui, comme Hugh, étaient initialement venus comme touristes. Cette fois, ils étaient en Éthiopie pour la remise du diplôme à leur premier étudiant réussi. Mulugeta a commencé l'école à 15 ans ; il avait maintenant terminé un cours de trois ans en gestion touristique et tout le monde était fier.
Les anges sont grands en Éthiopie. Leurs visages ronds et bienveillants, encadrés de cheveux afro, recouvrent le plafond de Debre Birhan Selassie à Gondar, à quelques encablures de Lalibela. Les peintures du XIXe siècle de cette église sont extraordinairement graphiques dans leurs images du martyre chrétien. Je dois admettre une fascination morbide pour les représentations de l'église. Il y a des décapitations, des pendaisons et des crucifixions à l'envers, sous la surveillance d'un énorme diable jubilatoire et léché par les flammes.
Mais si vous recherchez des peintures murales vraiment horribles, dirigez-vous vers le sud jusqu'au lac Tana, la source du Nil Bleu, et faites une excursion en bateau jusqu'au monastère d'Ura Kidane Mihret, sur la péninsule de Zege. Presque caché dans la forêt, où les perroquets hurlent et les singes gambadent, ce lieu excelle dans les représentations imaginatives de tueries prolongées. Aux habituelles décapitations s'ajoutent un écorchage et un rôtissage. Là où le saint a réussi à garder la tête, il ne semble que légèrement perturbé par ce qui se passe, à l'exception de saint Sébastien qui a l'air vraiment très mécontent des 18 flèches qui lui ont été tirées dans le torse.
L’Église orthodoxe éthiopienne a ajouté ses propres livres saints à la Bible et a accès à certains saints qui ont mené une vie merveilleusement inhabituelle. J'ai une affection particulière pour saint Tekla Haymanot qui a passé sept ans debout sur une jambe, survivant avec une graine par an nourrie par un oiseau qui, en retour, buvait les larmes du saint. Ensuite, il y a Belayeseb, qui a été tenté par le diable de devenir cannibale et qui s'est régalé d'une bonne partie de la chair humaine, à en juger par son obésité et les membres égarés qui l'entouraient, et qui a pourtant réussi à atteindre le paradis grâce à l'intervention de la Vierge Marie. . Samuel a fait encore mieux, chevauchant un lion à l'air furieux qui fait pénitence pour avoir mangé la mule du saint.
Les lions appartiennent peut-être au passé dans cette partie de l'Éthiopie, mais les « babouins » geladas qui habitent les montagnes du Simien ont quelque chose de léonin. Je ne peux me résoudre à les appeler des singes, malgré leur nouvelle classification. C'étaient des « babouins au cœur saignant » la dernière fois que j'y suis allé, c'est donc comme ça que je les considère. Ce n’est pas grave : ils cochent toutes les cases pour une expérience animalière de premier ordre. Les mâles arborent une chevelure de lin luxuriante qui cache presque leur visage noir en forme de cacahuète. Sur leur poitrine se trouve une tache de peau rose en forme de cœur qui devient rouge lors des moments de passion. Les adultes rivalisent avec le bétail local pour leur nourriture préférée, l'herbe, tandis que les jeunes s'ébattent et s'ébattent autour d'eux. Ajoutez à cela un fond de sommets montagneux ciselés, un escarpement spectaculaire et un aperçu de l'un des animaux les plus rares d'Afrique, le bouquetin walia à cornes massives, et vous vous demandez combien de temps il faudra avant que cet endroit ne soit « découvert ».
Autrefois, un voyage ici impliquait une dure journée de randonnée à dos de mulet juste pour atteindre l'escarpement, puis trois ou quatre jours de randonnée pour voir le meilleur du paysage. Désormais, le Simien Lodge propose un hébergement confortable en plein parc national – et une bouillotte pour se protéger de l'air froid de la nuit – afin que les visiteurs puissent marcher autant ou aussi peu qu'ils le souhaitent. Le lodge n'est pas bon marché mais il est unique en Éthiopie par la portée de ses projets communautaires, financés par 2,5 pour cent de leurs revenus et complétés par les dons de généreux visiteurs. Tant de choses ont été accomplies de cette manière : des bancs d'école pour que les enfants ne soient plus assis par terre pendant leurs cours et que le menuisier local ait un revenu, et des poêles en ciment économes en combustible pour les familles les plus nécessiteuses, qui en échange doivent planter des arbres. La déforestation est un problème désespéré dans la région, mais elle est inévitable là où la plupart des familles cuisinent encore sur des feux ouverts. Le résultat : 7 000 jeunes arbres et 1 000 familles dont la vie a été un peu facilitée.
C'est certainement là l'avenir du tourisme dans des pays comme l'Éthiopie, qui peut exploiter le désir des visiteurs de donner quelque chose de tangible en retour. Et les touristes fortunés ne sont pas les seuls à pouvoir y contribuer. À Debarek, où les routards commencent leur périple dans le Simiens, le Peace Corps a ouvert un cybercafé tenu par des filles orphelines du sida. Il suffit donc d'envoyer votre blog par courrier électronique pour aider la communauté.
Bien que l'Éthiopie ne soit pas encore exempte d'enfants exigeants, on pouvait remarquer à quel point ils étaient polis et amicaux dans les zones touristiques populaires. Le Derg aurait été désespéré de voir quelle forme avait pris leur conscience politique ces jours-ci.

I reflected upon how much had changed in the 34 years since I was last in Ethiopia, backpacking the length of the country with my husband, George. Then, we were harassed daily by children, at best verbally, at worst with stones. A teacher told us that the Marxist government, the Derg, had closed the secondary schools so that pupils could "disperse among the broad masses dispensing political indoctrination" and that most children (or their parents) had been boycotting the school anyway because of their "high level of political consciousness". The result was bands of feral children demonstrating their political consciousness with dedication and enthusiasm, including sticking a piece of paper to our bus window stating: "Exploter. Yankey Emperiolist go home."
The Derg, originally a collaboration between the police and army, came to power after the overthrow of Haile Selassie in 1974 and chose socialism as the way forward. "I supported them at the beginning," my guide, Bedassa, told me. "There were so many injustices under Haile Selassie. And the army was a good career. We were taught that foreigners were on the side of imperialism. Yes, I hated Americans. And the British!" I asked if he had changed his mind, but I knew the answer. Bedassa has his own company now and tourists are discovering Ethiopia in increasing numbers. But in 1976 we not only represented the enemy but there was a civil war as Eritrea fought for its independence.
Axum is a bullet's range from the Eritrean border and in 1976 George and I were forbidden to travel there. It's where Ethiopian history began, and it was my first stop in 2010. Two thousand years ago, the Axumite empire was an important trading centre, and by the mid fourth century Christianity was the official religion. Axum is also the legendary resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, so its religious history spans both Old and New Testaments. It's a fascinating place, reminiscent of Egypt with its pre-Christian obelisks. More than 24m high and carved from huge blocks of granite, transported, perhaps by elephants, from a quarry almost four miles away, these monuments are an extraordinary feat, rendered even more impressive by the fact that they serve no purpose – except to impress. They seem to have been erected by a series of rulers to symbolise power, and are decorated with fake doors and windows. Below them are burial chambers whose perfect masonry is reminiscent of the Incas, though predating them by 1,000 years.
The ancient Ethiopians were unparalleled in their mastery of stone cutting. Throughout the north of the country are rock-hewn churches, the most famous of which are in Lalibela, built on hills surrounded by flat, fertile plains. Fertility leads to wealth, and as the great churches and cathedrals of the Christian world testify, wealthy states have turned to God to maintain their fortunes.
So it was in Lalibela. But I prefer the Ethiopian version of how the town's churches came to be created in the 12th century by the eponymous king. A swarm of bees prophesied that Lalibela would replace his brother, the rightful heir. The brother was understandably peeved, particularly because he was king at the time. His attempt to poison his brother was a conspicuous failure, however, since while Lalibela was in a coma, an angel took his soul to heaven and showed him designs for the churches he must build in and around the little settlement of Roha. At the same time, another angel visited the king and persuaded him to abdicate in favour of Lalibela.
So, the scene was set for the construction of perhaps the most extraordinary ancient site in sub-Saharan Africa. The angels had no interest in building churches the easy way, from the ground up. No, they must be carved out of the rock underfoot, cutting downwards until a free-standing church was created at the bottom of a deep pit with a labyrinth of tunnels and trenches providing subterranean access. The 14 churches were completed in 24 years, so they say, with angels taking over the night shift.
In 1976, I wrote: "Lalibela is quite a town. It has a hospital, a tourist hotel with another being built ... and lots of impoverished people." Now, it has 20 hotels, and fewer impoverished people. The tourists who arrive daily have left their mark in a positive way. I met Hugh Sharp, a doctor who has twinned Lalibela with Glastonbury, and over five years has raised £90,000 for community projects in the town. I also ran across the founders of Ethiopia Education Aid who, like Hugh, originally came as tourists. This time they were in Ethiopia for the graduation of their first successful student. Mulugeta started school at 15; now he'd finished a three-year course in tourist management and everyone was proud.
Angels are big in Ethiopia. Their round, benevolent faces, framed by Afro hair, cover the ceiling of Debre Birhan Selassie in Gondar, a short flight from Lalibela. The 19th-century paintings in this church are extraordinarily graphic in their images of Christian martyrdom. I have to admit to a morbid fascination in the church's depictions. There are beheadings, hangings and upside-down crucifixions, with a huge, gloating, flame-licked devil supervising.
But, if you are looking for seriously gruesome murals, head south to Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, and take a boat trip to the monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret, on the Zege Peninsula. Almost hidden in the forest, where parrots screech and monkeys scamper, this place excels itself in imaginative depictions of prolonged killings. Added to the usual beheadings, there's a flaying and a roasting. Where the saint has managed to keep his head he looks no more than mildly perturbed at what's being done, with the exception of St Sebastian who looks very cross indeed at the 18 arrows that were shot into his torso.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church has added its own holy books to the Bible and has access to some saints who led splendidly unusual lives. I have a particular affection for St Tekla Haymanot who spent seven years standing on one leg, surviving on one seed a year fed to him by a bird, which in return drank from the saint's tears. Then there's Belayeseb, who was tempted by the devil to turn cannibal and enjoyed quite a bit of human flesh, judging by his obesity and the stray limbs about his person, and yet he managed to get to heaven due to the intervention of the Virgin Mary. Samuel has done even better, riding on a furious-looking lion which is paying penance for eating the saint's mule.
Lions may be a thing of the past in this part of Ethiopia, but there's something leonine about the gelada "baboons" that inhabit the Simien Mountains. I can't bring myself to call them monkeys, despite their new classification. They were "bleeding-heart baboons" when I was last there, so that's how I think of them. Not that it matters: they tick all the boxes for a top-notch wildlife experience. The males sport luxuriant flaxen hair which almost hides their peanut-shaped black faces. On their chest is a heart-shaped patch of pink skin which turns red at times of passion. The adults compete with the local livestock for their favourite food, grass, while the youngsters tumble and frolic around them. Add a background of chiselled mountain peaks, a dramatic escarpment and a glimpse of one of the rarest animals in Africa, the massive-horned walia ibex, and you wonder how long it will be before this place is "discovered".
In the old days, a trip here involved an arduous day's mule trek just to reach the escarpment, and then three or four days of trekking to see the best of the scenery. Now the Simien Lodge provides comfortable accommodation right in the national park – and a hot-water bottle to ward off the chill night air – so visitors can walk as much or as little as they want. The lodge is not cheap but it is unique in Ethiopia in the outreach of its community projects, funded by 2.5 per cent of their income and topped up by donations from generous visitors. So much has been achieved this way: school benches so the children no longer sit on the floor for their lessons and the local carpenter has an income, and fuel-efficient cement stoves for the neediest families, who in return must plant trees. Deforestation is a desperate problem in the region but it's inevitable where most families still cook on open fires. The result: 7,000 young trees and 1,000 families whose lives have been made a little easier.
This, surely, is the future of tourism in places such as Ethiopia that can tap into visitors' desire to give something tangible back. And it's not only wealthy tourists who can contribute. In Debarek, where backpackers begin their Simiens trek, the Peace Corps has opened an internet café run by girls orphaned by Aids, so just emailing your blog helps the community.
Although Ethiopia is not yet free from demanding children, it was noticeable how polite and friendly they were in the popular tourist areas. The Derg would have despaired to see what form their political consciousness has taken these days.

GOD IS MY PROSPERITY.
God is my prosperity - a prosperity that truly satisfies me.
Prosperity is never really about having an abundance of things, it is about knowing God and knowing that God has created an abundant word for us.
There may be a limit to the things I can claim as mine. Someone may build a bigger house, own a better car, or earn more money. However, the abundance of God is for everyone and satisfies every need.
To know God as a loving presence is to experience prosperity. To realize that God's spirit lives within me is to feel prosperous. To understand that God’s spirit is also within my loved ones is to consciously share the good news of prosperity. To believe I am worthy is to be prosperous.
God is my prosperity - a prosperity of abundant blessings that satisfies every need.
"I am going to bring it recovery and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security." - Jeremiah 33.6

DIEU EST MA PROSPÉRITÉ.
Dieu est ma prospérité – une prospérité qui me satisfait vraiment.
La prospérité ne consiste jamais vraiment à avoir une abondance de choses, mais plutôt à connaître Dieu et à savoir que Dieu a créé une parole abondante pour nous.
Il y a peut-être une limite aux choses que je peux revendiquer comme miennes. Quelqu’un peut construire une maison plus grande, posséder une meilleure voiture ou gagner plus d’argent. Cependant, l’abondance de Dieu est pour chacun et satisfait à tous les besoins.
Connaître Dieu comme une présence aimante, c’est expérimenter la prospérité. Réaliser que l'esprit de Dieu vit en moi, c'est se sentir prospère. Comprendre que l’esprit de Dieu est également parmi mes proches, c’est partager consciemment la bonne nouvelle de la prospérité. Croire que j’en suis digne, c’est être prospère.
Dieu est ma prospérité – une prospérité de bénédictions abondantes qui satisfait tous les besoins.

STRENGTH OF SPIRIT
The spirit of God lives in me. I am strong in the strength of spirit.
Oh, what a feeling of power surges through me when I know that, by the spirit of God dwelling in me, I am mightier than any challenge or circumstance! I rise to the occasion - whatever it may be - because the spirit of God lives in me!
If at some future time I believe that I have to be stronger in order to meet some challenge or go through a time of change, I remind myself that God in me is strength of spirit. Such divine strength is constantly energizing and renewing me.
And the wonder of it all is that I grow stronger as I let my awareness of God in me increase. Through the spirit of God, I am strong. I can do that I am inspired to do because God is my inspiration and all that I need to accomplish anything. Yes, I am strong in the strength of Spirit!

FORCE D'ESPRIT
L'esprit de Dieu vit en moi. Je suis fort par la force de l'esprit.
Oh, quel sentiment de puissance m'envahit lorsque je sais que, grâce à l'esprit de Dieu qui habite en moi, je suis plus puissant que n'importe quel défi ou circonstance ! Je me montre à la hauteur – quelle qu’elle soit – parce que l’esprit de Dieu vit en moi !
Si, à l’avenir, je crois que je dois être plus fort pour relever un défi ou traverser une période de changement, je me rappelle que Dieu en moi est la force d’esprit. Une telle force divine me dynamise et me renouvelle constamment.
Et ce qui est merveilleux dans tout cela, c’est que je deviens plus fort à mesure que je laisse ma conscience de Dieu en moi augmenter. Grâce à l’esprit de Dieu, je suis fort. Je peux faire ce pour quoi je suis inspiré parce que Dieu est mon inspiration et tout ce dont j’ai besoin pour accomplir quoi que ce soit. Oui, je suis fort dans la force de l'Esprit !

I infuse my relationships with love and harmony.
What a great example of living in love and harmony Jesus gave to the word with His simple request for a drink of water. Jews and Samaritans were divided by great differences, yet Jesus was able to turn aside differences and bring out the truth of universal spirituality when He spoke to and taught a Samaritan woman at the well.
In everyday living, I, too, have many opportunities to infuse my relationships and my interactions with others with harmony. As I do, I nourish myself and my relationships by bringing to light my own spirituality and that of others.
The spirit of God is within us all and unites us in love and harmony. I can never meet a person who does not have the spirit of God within, so I help each person discover inner harmony and express it.

J'infuse mes relations d'amour et d'harmonie.
Quel bel exemple de vie dans l’amour et l’harmonie Jésus a donné à la parole avec sa simple demande de boire de l’eau. Les Juifs et les Samaritains étaient divisés par de grandes différences, mais Jésus était capable de mettre de côté les différences et de faire ressortir la vérité de la spiritualité universelle lorsqu'il parlait et enseignait à une Samaritaine au puits.
Dans la vie de tous les jours, j’ai moi aussi de nombreuses occasions d’insuffler de l’harmonie dans mes relations et mes interactions avec les autres. Ce faisant, je me nourris et nourris mes relations en mettant en lumière ma propre spiritualité et celle des autres.
L'esprit de Dieu est en nous tous et nous unit dans l'amour et l'harmonie. Je ne peux jamais rencontrer une personne qui n'a pas l'esprit de Dieu en lui, j'aide donc chacun à découvrir l'harmonie intérieure et à l'exprimer.
