Let me begin with a confession. The thought has passed through my mind whether it might not have made some sense not to deliver a lecture on this occasion today. That way one would have admitted in a demonstrative manner that so far with all our speeches we have made little we have made little impact where made little impact where we are concerned with those dangers that threaten the very existence of the human race. However, nobody must fear or may hope that I will not make a speech; otherwise I would not be here today. In any case I would have wanted to express my deep-felt gratitude towards those who have bestowed this great honour upon me. In doing so I think of all those with whom I have had the pleasure of cooperating in recent years. Without an exchange of views and ideas, and without the encouragement from others, I would not have dared to step into that field full of traps which is the area of linkages between peace and development. Now it could rightly be said that there is really no need for another analysis of the state of the world; of the growing number of problems; of the immense dangers; of the better. Conclusions have been drawn from the many analyses - in terms of methods, substance and policies, even in terms of institutions. There is a great number of proposals and recipes, in almost all areas. They range from economics to armaments; from money and finance to hunger; from drought or deforestation to the rapid growth of world population. There is a wide choice for everyone willing to choose. The supermarket of world problems and their solutions offers a complete inventory. There is hardly any gap on the shelves. Sans un échange de vues et d'idées, et sans les encouragements des autres, je n'aurais pas osé m'aventurer dans ce domaine semé d'embûches qu'est celui des liens entre paix et développement. Or, on pourrait dire à juste titre qu’il n’est vraiment pas nécessaire de procéder à une autre analyse de l’état du monde ; du nombre croissant de problèmes ; des immenses dangers; du meilleur. Des conclusions ont été tirées des nombreuses analyses - en termes de méthodes, de contenu et de politiques, voire en termes d'institutions. Il existe un grand nombre de propositions et de recettes, dans presque tous les domaines. Ils vont de l’économie à l’armement ; de l'argent et de la finance à la faim ; de la sécheresse ou de la déforestation à la croissance rapide de la population mondiale. Il existe un large choix pour tous ceux qui sont prêts à choisir. Le supermarché des problèmes du monde et de leurs solutions propose un inventaire complet. Il n'y a pratiquement aucun espace dans les étagères.
