ANOTHER BIBLE READING OF THE DAY: Haggai 1

A CALL TO REBUILD THE LORD’S HOUSE

1 On the first day of the sixth month in Darius’ second year as king, the Lord spoke his word through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel (who was the son of Shealtiel and was governor of Judah) and to the chief priest Joshua (who was the son of Jehozadak). He said, 

2 “This is what the Lord of Armies says: These people say it’s not the right time to rebuild the house of the Lord.”

3 Then the Lord spoke his word through the prophet Haggai. He said, 

4 “Is it time for you to live in your paneled houses while this house lies in ruins? 

5 Now, this is what the Lord of Armies says: Carefully consider your ways! 

6 You planted a lot, but you harvested little. You eat, but you’re never full. You drink, but you’re still thirsty. You wear clothing, but you never have enough to keep you warm. You spend money as fast as you earn it. 

7 This is what the Lord of Armies says: Carefully consider your ways!

8 “Go to the mountains, get lumber, and build the house. I will be pleased with it, and I will be honored,” declares the Lord.

9 “You expected a lot, but you received a little. When you bring something home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of Armies. “It’s because my house lies in ruins while each of you is busy working on your own house. 

10 It is because of you that the sky has withheld its dew and the earth has withheld its produce. 

11 I called for a drought on the land, the hills, and on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and whatever the ground produces, on humans and animals, and on all your hard work.”

THE WORK ON THE HOUSE RESUMES

12 Then Zerubbabel (who was the son of Shealtiel), the chief priest Joshua (who was the son of Jehozadak), and the faithful few who returned from Babylon obeyed the Lord their God. They also obeyed the words of the prophet Haggai because the Lord their God had sent him and because the people feared the Lord.

13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord who had received the Lord’s message, said to the people, “I am with you, declares the Lord.”

14 The Lord inspired them ⌞to rebuild his house⌟. So Zerubbabel (who was the son of Shealtiel and was governor of Judah), the chief priest Joshua (who was the son of Jehozadak), and the faithful few who returned from Babylon began working on the house of the Lord of Armies, their God. 

15 They began on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in Darius’ second year as king.

UN APPEL À RECONSTRUIRE LA MAISON DU SEIGNEUR

1 Le premier jour du sixième mois de la deuxième année du règne de Darius, l'Éternel adressa sa parole par l'intermédiaire du prophète Aggée à Zorobabel (fils de Shealtiel et gouverneur de Juda) et au grand prêtre Josué (qui était le fils de Jozadak). Il a dit, 

2 « Voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées : Ces gens disent que ce n’est pas le moment de reconstruire la maison du Seigneur. »

3 Alors le Seigneur prononça sa parole par l'intermédiaire du prophète Aggée. Il a dit, 

4 « Est-il temps pour vous d'habiter dans vos maisons à panneaux alors que cette maison est en ruine ? 

5 Or, voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées : Considérez bien vos voies ! 

6 Vous avez planté beaucoup, mais vous avez peu récolté. Vous mangez, mais vous n’êtes jamais rassasié. Vous buvez, mais vous avez toujours soif. Vous portez des vêtements, mais vous n’en avez jamais assez pour vous garder au chaud. Vous dépensez de l’argent aussi vite que vous le gagnez. 

7 Ainsi dit le Seigneur des armées : Considérez bien vos voies !

8 « Va dans les montagnes, prends du bois et bâtis la maison. J’en serai content et j’en serai honoré », déclare le Seigneur.

9 « Vous attendiez beaucoup, mais vous avez reçu peu. Quand tu ramènes quelque chose à la maison, je le souffle. Pourquoi?" déclare le Seigneur des Armées. « C’est parce que ma maison est en ruine alors que chacun de vous est occupé à travailler sur sa propre maison. 

10 C'est à cause de toi que le ciel a refusé sa rosée et que la terre a refusé ses produits. 

11 J'ai appelé à la sécheresse sur la terre, sur les collines, sur le blé, sur le vin nouveau, sur l'huile d'olive et sur tout ce que produit la terre, sur les hommes et sur les animaux, et sur tous vos durs travaux.

REPRISE DES TRAVAUX SUR LA MAISON

12 Alors Zorobabel, fils de Shealtiel, le grand prêtre Josué, fils de Jozadak, et les quelques fidèles qui revenaient de Babylone obéirent à l'Éternel, leur Dieu. Ils obéirent également aux paroles du prophète Aggée parce que l'Éternel, leur Dieu, l'avait envoyé et parce que le peuple craignait l'Éternel.

13 Alors Aggée, l'envoyé du Seigneur qui avait reçu le message du Seigneur, dit au peuple : « Je suis avec vous, déclare le Seigneur. »

14 Le Seigneur leur inspira « de reconstruire sa maison ». Alors Zorobabel (qui était le fils de Shealtiel et était gouverneur de Juda), le grand prêtre Josué (qui était le fils de Jehozadak) et les quelques fidèles qui revinrent de Babylone commencèrent à travailler à la maison du Seigneur des armées, leur Dieu.

15 Ils commencèrent le vingt-quatrième jour du sixième mois de la deuxième année du règne de Darius.
