NINEVEH TURNS FROM ITS WICKED WAYS
1 Then the Lord spoke his word to Jonah a second time. He said,
2 “Leave at once for the important city, Nineveh. Announce to the people the message I have given you.”
3 Jonah immediately went to Nineveh as the Lord told him. Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to walk through it.
4 Jonah entered the city and walked for about a day. Then he said, “In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed.”
5 The people of Nineveh believed God. They decided to fast, and everyone, from the most important to the least important, dressed in sackcloth.
6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7 Then he made this announcement and sent it throughout the city:
“This is an order from the king and his nobles: No one is to eat or drink anything. This includes all people, animals, cattle, and sheep.
8 Every person and animal must put on sackcloth. Cry loudly to God for help. Turn from your wicked ways and your acts of violence.
9 Who knows? God may reconsider his plans and turn from his burning anger so that we won’t die.”
10 God saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So God reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.

LECTURE BIBLIQUE DU JOUR : Jonas 3
NINIVE SE TOURNE DE SES MÉCHANTES VOIES
1 Alors le Seigneur adressa une seconde fois sa parole à Jonas. Il a dit,
2 « Partez immédiatement pour la ville importante, Ninive. Annoncez au peuple le message que je vous ai donné.
3 Jonas se rendit immédiatement à Ninive comme le Seigneur le lui avait dit. Ninive était une très grande ville. Il a fallu trois jours pour le parcourir.
4 Jonas entra dans la ville et marcha environ une journée. Puis il dit : « Dans quarante jours, Ninive sera détruite. »
5 Les habitants de Ninive crurent à Dieu. Ils décidèrent de jeûner, et tout le monde, du plus important au moins important, fut vêtu d'un sac.
6 Lorsque la nouvelle parvint au roi de Ninive, il se leva de son trône, ôta sa robe, se revêtit d'un sac et s'assit sur la cendre.
7 Alors il fit cette annonce et la fit circuler dans toute la ville :
« Ceci est un ordre du roi et de ses nobles : personne ne doit manger ni boire quoi que ce soit. Cela inclut toutes les personnes, animaux, bovins et moutons.
8 Toute personne et tout animal doivent revêtir un sac. Criez fort à Dieu pour obtenir de l'aide. Détournez-vous de vos mauvaises voies et de vos actes de violence.
9 Qui sait ? Dieu peut reconsidérer ses plans et se détourner de sa colère brûlante afin que nous ne mourrions pas.
10 Dieu vit ce qu’ils faisaient. Il vit qu'ils se détournaient de leurs mauvaises voies. Alors Dieu a reconsidéré sa menace de les détruire, et il ne l’a pas fait.
